hey you crazy cats
home from europe just in time to join my pals MUDDY YORK
thurs nov 17 at the Gladstone hotel in beautiful downtown Toronto for some kind of
mad folk collision
For Immediate release – October 25, 2011
MUDDY YORK Mash-up at the Gladstone
WHEN: Thursday, November 17th, 8:00-11:00, Door 7:30
WHERE: Gladstone Ballroom, 1214 Queen St. West, Toronto
HOW MUCH: $20 at the door. 18 and under $10.
WHAT:
In 1984 Anne Lederman and Ian Bell created a unique recording of 19th century Ontario grassroots music for the 20th century. Now, we invite you to celebrate the re-release of that recording for the 21st, on CD for the first time. On November 17, at the Gladstone, they are inviting both musicians from the original recording and new musical friends from many places to “have a go” at the old music.
A Scottish strathspey on Carnatic violin? A bit of snare drum and cahon? Bagpipes and kalimba? Why not? Old Ontario folk music meets the new Ontario, a place that musicians from all over the world call home. Through the miracles of modern (1980s) technology, Anne and Ian did most of the original recording themselves on fiddles, guitars, mandolins, hammered dulcimer, smallpipes, piano, bass and voices.
On November 17th, they will take to the stage with Pat O’Gorman (Rare Air) on bagpipes, flutes and whistles, Jeff Bird (Tamarack, Cowboy Junkies) on bass, Tom Leighton (Haines and Leighton) on piano and accordion, Subhadra Vijaykumar on Carnatic violin (from south India) composer and percussionist Debashis Sinha, Daryl Williams (North York Steel Band) on pan, Laura Smith, and other surprise musical guests.
Think Ontario has no folk music? Join us in the ballroom of the historic Gladstone Hotel in downtown Muddy York as the past meets the future.
